In most industrial processes, oil and petroleum products are used because these are one of the most essential energy resources in the world. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to use electricity in your homes. Now, how exactly is oil produced? It can be done through offshore oil and gas production! Here’s what you should know about it:
1. Oceans as a Source of Fossil Fuels
Offshore oil production is done to retrieve the fossil fuels buried deep into the ocean’s floors. These fossil fuels are often the remains of small living organisms from thousands of years ago, and these are used to produce oil.
2. Liquid vs. Solid Deposits
There are two kinds of petroleum: natural gas and oil shale or tar shards. The former is liquid petroleum in which it is often used in for clothes, medicines and other chemicals. Meanwhile, the latter is solid petroleum which is also used for chemicals and construction materials.
3. Equipment Used
Two common equipment used in offshore oil production aside from mobile offshore production units are the sniffer equipment and gravity metre. The sniffer equipment is used to detect the location of oil under the sea. Whereas, the gravimetre has sensors that can be used to inspect the ocean’s floors for signs of oil.
4. Magnetic Survey
This one is one of the oldest methods used by geophysicists to identity archaeological remains on the ground. A magnetic survey is useful in offshore exploration because it can help determine if there are dangerous traps underneath the sea bed.
5. Exploratory Wells
Exploratory wells are often drilled to see if there are sources of natural gas further deep down the ocean’s ground. Although during the initial exploration, these wells don’t seem to contain oil sources at, there is still a chance to find some on its deepest layers.
6. Offshore Decommissioning
When an offshore oil and gas production is done, an offshore decommissioning will be done after. This means that this the production units will be dismantled so that there would be no wastes left in the ocean.
Aside from using as an energy source, oil is needed for the production of goods that we use every day. Thus, offshore oil production is needed to supply us with enough oil and natural gas for industrial production.
